What Do Men Want? What Do Men Need?
Before we can begin to set up an All-Inclusive Ministry to Men, you need to know what motivates men. We have found that every man wants three things:
- Something to give their lives to that will make a difference; they want their lives to count. In other words, men want to be involved in something bigger than themselves, something that is meaningful. (Cause)
- Someone to share their lives with – a life mate, small group, church community, etc. Despite what we are led to believe, men were made for relationships (Companion)
- A Personal System that explains why #1 and #2 are so difficult. (Conviction)
This is illustrated in Ecclesiastes 4:8: There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. “For whom am I toiling,” he asked, “and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?” This too is meaningless – a miserable business!
What do men need?
The obvious answer is the gospel – the one system that helps men change the core affections of their hearts.
The most important thing we can do is to let men know that there is a system that explains why it is so hard to find happiness in achievement or relationships in this world.
So, what do men need? They need the gospel – the one system that really works! This helps men move from relying on themselves or others to relying on God – which is called discipleship. It is the process of deepening a man’s relationship with God.
The Big Idea:
The greatest gift we can give a man is to help him change the core affections of his heart.
